Statement from the Geoversiv Foundation on the US administration’s ongoing process of forced family separation and child internment — Issued June 23, 2018
No society can be free, prosperous and secure, while power is used to terrorize, dehumanize, or detain vulnerable people on pretext or prejudice.
The Bill of Rights — one of the most necessary and transformational documents in world history — makes it unlawful for any agent of power in the United States to so mistreat the humanity of any person.
The politics of this moment in history is telling us, as in so many dangerous times before, that we are not unified in a continuous human project, that we should see ourselves as combatants surrounded by enemies.
This is not the truth of our world. There is violence, and justifiable fear. There is hate, based on unjustifiable prejudicial fear. There is injustice.
But we must recognize that no matter how much rightful or wrongful fear floods around us, we are never smarter for acting on prejudice.
Flippant aggressions never make us safer, because they cannot sustain what safeguards our humanity.
Geoversiv exists to support the deep interactive development of human intelligence, at all levels, for the building of a free, prosperous and secure future, in which human beings from everywhere are one another’s most valued and trusted source of ongoing support.
It is our view that the United States of America — embodied by its Constitution, its republican democracy and its diverse imaginative people — also exists to carry out this mission.
The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States affords “equal protection” to “all persons” (not citizens, but persons). There is no way to strip asylum seekers of such protection, without your protection being nullified in kind.
There is no credible basis on which any public official worthy of their office can claim to have difficulty distinguishing between violent killers and persecuted families seeking asylum based on credible fear of brutal persecution.
Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, is weakened and destabilized by violations of the personal, familial and physical integrity of any person.
The criminal act of forcibly abducting children from the embrace of their parents, with what is now widely reported as the intention never to return them, cannot be allowed to stand as legal precedent.
We look forward to the day, in the nearest possible future, when all officials, at all levels, adhere to the letter and the spirit of the law.
We call on all of the people of the United States, and especially those who have sworn to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, to ensure that the inalienable rights of every human being are protected absolutely at all times.
